A former career diplomat, he was also one of Australia's most successful trade negotiators. He was Australian Ambassador to GATT, the predecessor of the World Trade Organisation, and was the first Australian to serve as GATT Chairman. An authority on the implications of globalisation for trade and environmental issues and one of Australia's most sought-after analysts, Alan is a regular commentator on international trade matters for both press and television.
