layne beachley: seven-time world surfing champion
Layne Beachley speaks about the journey to her first world surfing championship at Australia Speaks, our 50th anniversary celebration.
Widely regarded as the most successful female surfer in history, Layne Beachley is the only competitor to ever claim six consecutive world titles (1998 to 2003), before going on to win a seventh in 2006.
Having spent two decades breaking down the barriers in her chosen profession, Beachley has committed herself to making it easier for young women to achieve their goals by establishing and directing the Layne Beachley Aim For The Stars Foundation. The Foundation provides financial and moral support to encourage young women to dare to dream, pursue their passion and aspire to achieve in academia, business, arts and sport.
Beachley was named the 2004 Laureus Alternative Sports Person of the Year, 2006 Surfing Hall of Fame inductee, 2011 Sport Australia Hall of Fame inductee, ISA World Masters Champion, and a 2012 Olympic Games Athlete Liaison Officer. In 2013 she was also named the third greatest Australian female athlete of all time, behind Dawn Fraser and Betty Cuthbert, and in 2015 was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service to the community, as a mentor for women in sport, and to surfing.
