Carl was born and bred on the family farm near Kingaroy, Queensland. Carl's sporting prowess first came to recognition as a schoolboy at Kingaroy State High School when he gained selection in the Queensland Under-19 side. After finishing school, Carl moved to Brisbane to advance his cricket career joining Wynnum-Manly and later playing for Sandgate-Redcliffe and Western Suburbs.
He made his first-class debut against Western Australia in 1979-80 but finished the game wicketless. His second game was to prove more fruitful. Against the touring Englishmen, Carl took 2/25. It was against England in 1982/83 that Carl made his test debut on his home ground, the GABBA. The 1994/95 season turned out to be probably the biggest year of Carl's career. At the age of 34, he was the Sheffield Shield's highest wicket taker with 52 scalps at an average of 23.39. This encouraged the Australian selectors to give him an unexpected recall to replace the injured Craig McDermott in the West Indies. Then followed an invitation to play the English County season with Surrey. All this on top of being honoured in 1994/95 with a testimonial year!
He finished his career with a record of 12 test matches - 39 wickets at 29.15, 52 one day internationals, 82 wickets at 22.35, and in 102 Shield games, a Queensland record 383 wickets at 26.31. This is the third highest in Sheffield Shield history . Although no longer playing professional cricket, Carl maintains a strong presence within the game through his roles as a radio and television commentator and Sunday Mail cricket columnist. In addition, he has a continuing and very close involvement with Queensland Cricket and runs his own coaching camp for children every Christmas holidays.
