James Hird is a retired Australian rules footballer and the former long-serving captain of the Essendon Football Club. One of the all-time legends of the game, he was the joint winner of the 1996 Brownlow Medal, and a member of Essendon’s 1993 and 2000 premiership winning sides.
Despite several serious injuries throughout his career, James Hird was able to play over 250 games, usually as an integral part of Essendon’s performance. He concluded his career at the end of the 2007 season by winning his fifth Best and Fairest award. Renowned for his poise, courage and skilful use of the ball, he is widely considered to be one of the greatest players ever.
Since retiring, he has embarked upon an extensive media career. Through his role with Fox Sports Footy, he has forged a reputation as an insightful special comments expert during game coverage as well as a well-researched and articulate analyst on programs such as On the Couch.
