Lieutenant General Des Mueller was Vice Chief of the Australian Defence Force between June 2000 and July 2002 before retiring. He entered the Royal Military College at Duntroon in 1961, graduating in 1964, serving with A Field Battery from 1965 to 1967 in Malaysia. Following a gunnery staff course at the United Kingdom School of Artillery, he was a serving officer with a number of Australian regiments before being posted to Canberra with the Directorate of Artillery.
In 1989 he was promoted to Brigadier and became Director General of Army Development and in 1990 as Director General Force Development (Land). Awarded an Order of Australia in 1993, he was promoted to Major General and appointed General Officer Commanding Logistic Command in 1994. Following the merger of support arrangements for the Navy, Army and Air Force he was appointed the first Commander Support Australia. In 1998 he was elevated to an Officer of the Order of Australia and in 2000 promoted to Lieutenant General and Vice Chief of the Australian Defence Force.
Des Mueller has a particular interest and a wealth of knowledge in change management and leadership development - especially the communication and the language of leadership, culture building and organisational development.
