In Milan in 2003, he and James Tomkins were the surprise winners, beating British favourites and defending champions Matthew Pinsent and James Cracknell. At the Athens Games in 2004, Drew and James won the gold medal in the coxless pairs. 2006 brought yet another coxless pair World Championship gold medal in Eton, and Drew and Duncan Free successfully defended the title the following year in Munich. In Beijing in 2008, Drew and Duncan claimed Olympic gold, and in London in 2012 Drew won a silver silver medal in the Australian men's coxless four.
Inducted as a member of the Rowing Victoria Hall of Fame in 2010, Drew briefly took up competitive road bicycle racing to immediate success, winning the the 2009 Oceania time trial championships and finishing sixth at the 2010 Australian national road championships.
After retiring from competition, Drew Ginn was appointed National Head Coach - Integration of Rowing Australia in 2012, responsible for the consistent delivery of the national training and technical model across all Australian performance rowing programs.
