Discovered by fashion designer Jenny Kee at age 12, Joy Smithers began her working life as a fashion model, living in Italy, Japan and the USA before studying acting at Sydney's Ensemble Theatre. Working as a jazz singer to make ends meet, she was offered a recording contract with Alberts by Kim Fowley (KISS, Joan Jett) at age 15 while singing at Arthur's nightclub.
After a hit record in Sweden in 1986 and an ARIA award for best soundtrack You've Always Got The Blues in 1989, she joined the band Eurogliders as backing singer, touring Australia many times over.
At 17 she began her life on screen with her first credit the Phillip Noyce Heatwave. Best remembered for her role in miniseriesBangkok Hilton and TV series Body Surfer and All Saints, Joy has enjoyed a rich and varied working life on Australian TV as both presenter and actress.
In 1999 Joy founded online education awareness program Shades 4 AIDS which is rolled out nationally through the Department of Education each May. In 2004 she assisted in establishing an NGO in rural Cambodia for the orphaned children of AIDS victims. The Hope for Cambodian Children Foundation Inc is an AusAID approved Charity with DGR status of which Joy is the Deputy Chair. Her passion is the prevention of mother-to-baby transmission of HIV. To date, the Hope outreach program has seen over 200 babies born HIV free.
Joy Smithers has returned from Africa having been cast alongside Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy in George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road, the fourth instalment of the series, shot in Namibia and Cape Town and due for release in December 2013.
Joy is equally comfortable as an MC, corporate video presenter, voice over artist and public speaker. She has appeared as a keynote speaker through the Young Leaders Foundation for many years and speaks to over 20,000 high school students per year on the topic of self esteem, a subject she has written about for New Idea magazine.
