Former President of Ireland, Mary Robinson was the first woman elected to this office and held the position from 1992 to 1997. As Ireland's Head of State, Mary Robinson is credited by many as having revitalised and liberalised a previously conservative political office. She represented her country internationally, developing a new sense of Ireland's economic, political and cultural links with other countries and cultures.
Upon retiring from the presidency, she became the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 1997 to 2002. Since 2002, she has been the Honorary President of Oxfam International, Chair of the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) and is also a founding member and Chair of the Council of Women World Leaders. Ms. Robinson is also one of the European Members of the Trilateral Commission and Chancellor of the University of Dublin.
Mary Robinson currently serves on many boards including as chair of the GAVI Alliance. Her newest project is Realizing Rights: the Ethical Globalization Initiative, which fosters equitable trade and decent work, promotes the right to health and more humane migration policies, works to strengthen women's leadership and encourage corporate responsibility. The organisation also supports capacity building and good governance in developing countries.
Since 2004, Mary Robinson has also been Professor of Practice in International Affairs at Columbia University, where she teaches international human rights. She also visits many colleges and universities around the world as a traveling professor lecturing on human rights.
In 2004, Mary Robinson received Amnesty International's Ambassador of Conscience Award for her work in promoting human rights. She has been named among Time's top 100 men and women whose 'power, talent, or moral example is transforming the world.' In 2009, President Obama awarded her with the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her significant global contributions. Her memoir, Everybody Matters: My Life Giving Voice was released in February 2013.
