Speaker Profile
Carbon Tax is big news presenting risks and opportunities to Australian businesses. For the early adopters it is an opportunity to 'future proof' themselves against the already rising costs of energy efficiency and to gain carbon revenues while doing so. They can also position themselves to become generators of carbon credits to offset their own liabilities and for sale in to the carbon economy.
Simon Fjell is currently working with large farming industries, food processors and retailers to remove the impacts of the Carbon Tax being passed on to consumers. With a problem is the solution approach these entities will profit from instead of be victims to the Carbon Tax.
He is also helping the Traditional Owners of Northern Australia to generate carbon finance revenues through a revival of traditional fire management practices which have considerable greenhouse gas saving benefits.
Simon is co-founder director a global sustainable design organisation with 150,000 graduates from training courses projects in over one hundred countries. He was a pioneer of exotic fruit growing in Northern Australia whilst spending the wet seasons establishing sustainable development teaching networks in the Ecuadorian Amazon and the Caribbean. Seeing so much human and environmental need for sustainable development he had a vision of valuing forests well ahead of carbon opportunities. He has, along with his wife, developed an Amazonian wild harvested skin care range due for launch in David Jones. By providing pro-poor forest ingredient collection opportunities he has been able to provide forest jobs that do not involve cutting down the carbon rich storages of the forests themselves. This whole of system approach unlocks further carbon revenues to supplement the skin cares commercialisation and entry in to a very competitive market. The 'story' captures mainstream customers and adds values to vanities.
Simon was also an advisor to the UNDP on the environmentally blighted Aral Sea in Uzbekistan, instigator of Waterwatch community water quality monitoring network in Melbourne, initiator of National Riverprize winning cleaner automotive service industry and householder eco-education projects and designer of award winning property developments that delivered superior environmental outcomes at less capital cost than conventional design. He has been and is currently a guest lecturer at numerous universities and business schools.
Simon is a highly quotable passionate and authentic speaker who is at the nexus of carbon opportunities and addressing carbon liabilities. He illustrates his presentations with first-hand experiences having divided his life between global boardrooms, as an orchardist and living and working with indigenous people in the Amazon and Australia's far north.
