Speaker Profile
Stephen retired from competitive cycling at the end of 1996, following a long career which began in Canberra, where he also completed a BSc degree at the Australian National University, moved on to national and international amateur racing and culminated in 10 years as a professional cyclist racing for some of the worlds top teams. He represented Australia at 10 World Championships, the Edinburgh Commonwealth Games and the Atlanta Olympics. Stephen also completed the Tour de France six times.
Since returning from Europe in February 1998, Stephen has become extensively involved in the Australian cycling scene, volunteering his time locally through ACT committees and events, and nationally through the establishment of a representative Australian Cyclists’ Commission and Directorship on the Board of Management of Cycling Australia.
He is an accredited coach and coaches local cyclists under the banner ‘Squadra H’. Stephen has developed a cycling skills training program for our elite triathlon squads through the Olympic Athlete Program which has subsequently been delivered to many triathlon and cycling groups over the last five years. He is a provider to the Athlete Career and Education program, lecturing scholarship athletes at the ACT Academy of Sport.
Following the establishment of a peak body for all Australian cycling organisations in 2002, the Cycling Promotion Alliance, Stephen was appointed to the Executive with responsibility for the Sport and Recreation portfolio.
Stephen is patron of two charitable causes, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation ‘Ride for a Cure’ (www.jdrf.org.au/ride) and the Men’s Link community organisation (www.menslink.org.au).

"My main contact person was Caroline Martel; she was extremely helpful and always followed up my many emails promptly. As I have never booked a speaker under these circumstances, I had many questions! Caroline was obviously very knowledgeable and was a delight to work with."
