Captain Tan Hup
Captain Tan Hup Cheng pursued a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nautical Studies at the University of Southampton from 1973 to 1978. The course was awared under the auspices of the British Commonwealth Colombo Plan Scholarship scheme. He graduated with a second class Upper Honours Degree. As part of his nautical training he served two years on onboard cargo ships acquiring the necessary experience and qualified as a Second Mate.
After graduating in 1978, he returned to Singapore to complete his military service in the Republic of Singapore Navy attaining the rank of Lieutenant on de-mobilisation. After leaving the Navy in June 1981, he joined Neptune Orient Lines as a Second Officer, working his way up to the rank of Captain when he took command of his first vessel, a 38,000 bulk carrier in Oct 1987.
He came ashore in 1988 and worked in Neptune Orient Lines as the Logistics Manager for the entire North American Service In 1995 ,he was appointed the VP & Head of NOL’s Special Project Cargo Department and concurrently General Manager for Specargo Forwarding . He is not only well versed in sea and air freight forwarding business but also in the supply chain cargo management system. He managed and operated a 5300 sq metre warehouse at Keppel Distripark , which specialses in deconsolidation and consolidation of transit containerized cargo from several origins in SE Asia and making one full box for one destination in the USA. Corporate customers like GAP, Nike, Sony used this service.
In June 2000 , he joined the Port of New York & New Jersey as their Regional Director for South and South East Asia , based in Singapore. His work primarily involved the promotion of the use of the Port of New York & new Jersey among global shipping lines and major shippers of cargo. As the Port Authority also owns JFK, Newark Liberty International Airport and La Guardia Airport, his work also involved persuading Asian airlines to start services to New York. One such success was the establishment of non stop services between Bangkok and New York , by Thai Airways in May 05. He has developed a wealth of contacts consisting of major sea and air carriers, major cargo shippers, exporters , port operators, government officials and key industry players.
Captain Tan has been invited to speak at many shipping conferences in the region, delivering several papers on supply chain management from the port perspective.
