Tim Lane is one of the most respected sporting commentators in Australia. He's been broadcasting and writing about sport for 46 years.
His starting point was an accidental introduction to football broadcasting in Devonport, Tasmania, in 1972. There followed a thirty-year career with the ABC, in Launceston, Hobart, and - from 1979 to 2003 - in Melbourne.
Current work
Tim has worked in commercial radio and television with the Ten Network and 3AW and he’s been a regular contributor to the sports pages of The Age and The Sunday Age.
In all, Tim has ‘called’ roughly 1500 VFL and AFL games, including 33 Grand Finals. He has broadcast well over a hundred Test matches, covered five Olympic Games, and seven Commonwealth Games. He’s also worked on sports as diverse as fencing, lawn bowls, motor racing, and golf. And, at one stage in his career, he even gained hands-on experience of the last of these by caddying for an Australian professional on the European Tour.
There hasn't been a major sporting event in this nation in the past quarter of a century, which hasn't had Tim's unique and distinct commentary style across it.
In so many ways his articulate commentary, thoughtful analysis and obvious passion for our games, most notably AFL, have seen him emerge as Australia's voice of sport.
