Profile

Dr Stefan Hajkowicz is a Chief Research Consultant at the national science agency CSIRO.

He is one of Australia’s leading experts on digital technology and artificial intelligence strategy and policy. He routinely provides consulting advisory services to industry and government organisations on these topics. He led the development of the national AI roadmap and ethics framework published by the Australian Government.

He recently led a body of work about the application of AI for science, research and knowledge discovery. His most recent report is Australia’s national AI Ecosystem report, launched in December 2023, which details the capabilities and specialisations of Australia’s emerging AI companies and AI R&D sector. In related work with the Technology Council of Australia he led a project and report which mapped and described Australia’s own unique “Silicon Valleys” - geographic clusters of digital technology industry in cities and regions.

His current work with the National Artificial Intelligence Centre (NAIC) is focused on practical and simple ways Australian companies of all shapes and sizes can pick up the powerful and complex AI toolkit. He aims to help companies choose the right tools for the right business problems and how they can adapt to a changing marketplace due to AI-fuelled disruption. In addition to having excellent knowledge of AI technology Stefan is an engaging, entertaining and thought-provoking speaker.
