Hon Sir Roger
Sir Roger Douglas is internationally known as the strategist and driving force behind New Zealand's economic reforms including the deregulation of its financial markets and the floating of its dollar, the adoption of privatisation policies and dramatic reforms of the taxation system, including the introduction of a GST. Sir Roger possesses a vast knowledge of economic and political matters of particular relevance to an Australian audience.
Since leaving Parliament in 1990, Sir Roger has been the Managing Director of Roger Douglas Associates, an international consulting firm specialising in advising on economic restructuring and structural adjustment. A continuing influence on the New Zealand economy, he is on the Advisory Board of Aetna Health New Zealand Ltd, Director of Tasman Institute and founder member of ACT NZ. He has been a Director of Brierley Investments Ltd, 1990-1999 (Chairman, 1998), and a Director of John Fairfax Holdings Ltd, 1997-1998.
Besides his consultancy work with the World Bank, Sir Roger has worked for his private clients around the globe, including Brazil, Hungary, Canada, the USA, Russia, Pakistan, Mexico, Austria, Fiji, the Philippines, Vietnam, Australia, China, South Africa, Hong Kong, Singapore, the Netherlands, England, Sweden, Japan, Thailand and Peru. In 1996 he was awarded Switzerland's Max Schmidheiny Freedom Prize for his contribution to the preservation and development of a free social and economic order, and in 1997 he was awarded the Ludwig Erhard Prize for Economic Journalism.
His publications include There's Got to be a Better Way (1981), Toward Prosperity (1987), Unfinished Business (1993) and Completing the Circle (1996).
Sir Roger is capable of shedding insight into all issues relating to the economy, including tax reform and the GST. His talks are compelling and articulate, relating New Zealand's political history to the current political and economic climate around the world.
