Alexa
Leary

Paralympic champion and inspirational trailblazer

Profile

Alexa Leary, known to many as “Lex,” is one of Australia’s most inspiring athletes, a Paralympic champion, world record holder and powerful advocate for resilience and positivity. At just 23 years of age, she has become a household name not only for her performances in the pool but for the way she has redefined what it means to overcome adversity.

A promising triathlete in her teenage years, Alexa’s sporting career changed course after a life-threatening cycling accident in 2021 left her with a traumatic brain injury. She spent 11 months in hospital, enduring challenges that would have ended most athletic careers. Refusing to let her story end there, she turned to para swimming, where her determination and natural talent quickly propelled her onto the international stage.

Alexa made her Paralympic debut in Paris 2024, winning gold in the 100m freestyle S9 and silver in the 50m freestyle S9, instantly becoming one of the breakout stars of the Games. She followed that up with a series of standout performances at the 2025 World Para Swimming Championships in Singapore, claiming gold in the 100m freestyle S9, gold in the mixed medley relay, and silver in the 50m freestyle S9, while also breaking the world record in the 100m freestyle S9.

Training on the Gold Coast under coach Jon Bell at Bond University, Alexa has cemented herself as one of the fastest para swimmers in the world, with her fearless approach and infectious energy making her a fan favourite across Australia.

Music has also played a central role in Alexa’s journey. It was a constant source of strength during her long recovery, helping her stay motivated and positive through months of rehabilitation. In 2025, she signed with electronic music label Etcetc, which also represents global superstar Fisher, and released her debut track Closer, which she co-produced. Now establishing herself as a producer and DJ, Alexa is combining her passion for music with her platform as an athlete, creating a unique presence across both sport and entertainment.

Looking ahead to LA 2028 and then the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, which will be a home Games for her, Alexa is not only chasing more gold but also determined to use her story to uplift others. A symbol of courage and joy, she embodies the power of sport, music and storytelling to transform lives and inspire a nation.
