The future is not some place on a map that we are all going to - it is an idea in our mind.
Barrie Barton is a lawyer by qualification, an entrepreneur by nature and an urbanist by profession. He has spent most of his adult life thinking about the relationship between the places where we live and the sorts of people we become as a result. In late 2019 he was named one of Harper’s Bazaar’s Visionary Men for his contribution to city life
Barrie relentlessly works to change our cities for the better and believes that citizens bear as much responsibility for creating places as the property industry or government. Founded in 2005, his consultancy Right Angle Studio is engaged by developers and government around the globe, providing unique forecasts on how their cities are evolving and how to make the most of that change through creative development concepts. From build to-rent models in London, uplifting slums in Johannesburg, city-crowning mixed-use in Bangkok and a host of projects right across Australia, Right Angle advocate for places that are more enriching and communities that are more caring.
Apart from work helping clients with their land and development concepts, Barrie has also founded a number of highly successful start ups including Melbourne’s Rooftop Cinema, Paramount Recreation Club and Sydney’s Golden Age Cinema & Bar - all businesses that have filled a special gap in the life of their cities and have become much-loved places.
Barrie relentlessly works to change the way we think about our cities and the experiences they provide us in return. Closing Keynote - Universal Development FeaturesWe may be gathered in Hong Kong to discuss the Asia Pacific region, but whatever is developed locally has global consequences. From his experience advising the property industry and governments globally, Right Angle Studio’s strategy and insights director Barrie Barton will be closing the summit with a thought provoking address on emerging global development trends. From cross-sectional communities to whole-system thinking he’ll demonstrate that even on a universal scale we are defined more by our similarities than our differences, and need creative development approaches to create the future we want.

Barrie’s keynote helped reconnect our employees to our purpose to create the world’s best places. Barrie spoke about the global mega-trends impacting our sector and inspired 1,000 employees from our development business across 4 events in Perth, Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney. We had some terrific feedback to his session which certainly opened our employees’ eyes to the opportunities available to them respond to those trends through their work for Lendlease. Barrie is thought provoking. He gets people thinking beyond tomorrow and, at the same time, keeps it very real and tangible for the audience to own.
Barrie and Right Angle Studio are at the forefront of placemaking innovation and urban strategy. REMIX Summits seeks out those people that are positively transforming life in our cities to share their stories and Barrie is a compelling thinker and storyteller with thatrare ability to combine theory and real-world delivery and experience.
