Keynote: The Neuroscience of Stress and Anxiety (and How to Deal with It )

This session will unpack how our stress response activates, and the impact this can have on our thought processes, our emotionality and even our health. Combining neuroscientific and biological information into an easy-to-understand session, Kathryn will inform you in a way that individualises it to your own journey. This way, you can leave with information that you can instantly transform into practice, into a more engaged, healthier lifestyle. Being more aware of our own mental well-being will mean we can turn up to our workplaces and homes with the capacity to engage and enjoy our lives to a greater level.

Key Takeaways:

- Increased understanding of the science of the stress responses in our brain and body
- Individualised understanding of yourself and the importance of your life journey
- Recognition of the impact that giving self-care priority can have on multiple facets of life
- Improved inter-relational spaces in the work-place and home, due to more regulated nervous systems
- Practical ways to instantly make changes to our lives

Workshop: Unpacking the Keynote

The workshop is a space where the audience can unpack any questions that arise from Kathryn’s keynote. This will be a fully interactive and audience led discussion space.

Workshop: Anxiety & Resilience

The subject of anxiety is a difficult one, especially with it being on the rise. This session will unpack the neuroscientific understanding of what anxiety is. We will also work through what resilience is, which is one of the main antidotes to anxiety. We are doing actions every day that can increase our resilience. We are also engaging in activities that are limiting this development. Once we get a much better understanding of what these elements are, we can gain better control over our environments. This way, we can increase our own resilience, and support the development in those around us. We can’t take away the stressors around us. What we can do, is build resilience so we can deal with them in the most effective way.

Key Takeaways:
- Understanding what anxiety is, how it manifests in the body, and the impact it can have on our lives
- Ability to recognise what resilience is and how to support it in ourselves and others
- Tools to immediately put in place and start reducing anxiety where possible

Full Day Session: Anxiety & Resilience

The first part of this day will be gaining an understanding of the neuroscience of stress, particularly considering the activation of anxiety. Unpacking how our stress response system controls so much of what we do, is integral to recognising the importance that resilience plays in our lives. This information is communicated in a way that allows each individual to understand their own unique stress response system.

Then we will move on to how we can begin to gain more control over our stress response systems. This is the resilience part of the session, where we will work through how we naturally develop resilience. There will be an emphasis on why our modern world can hinder natural resilience. The outcome of this is recognising what we can do, within our current environments, to build a more resilient stress response system. The outcomes are multiple, including improved learning, more emotional control and better physical health.

This day will be interactive. Audiences can engage with the information to ensure they are hearing the most relevant and applicable science for their situation.

Full Day Session: Trauma Informed Practice

To work in a truly trauma informed way, we first need to fully understand trauma. This session will unpack how trauma develops. We will reframe trauma into recognising it as an over-sensitisation of the stress response. Respecting and validating how impactful it can be to lead a life with an over-sensitised stress response is essential to working towards a space of healing.

A deep dive into the autonomic nervous system, explained in an easy to digest way, will help participants better recognise sensitisation in others, and even themselves.

Healing of a sensitised stress response system is surprisingly simple. The catch is that it will take time, patience and a lot of understanding. Much of what we currently do is positive and healing, we just may not fully recognise how great we are doing. We often concentrate in the wrong areas when it comes to trauma. This session will help you become more aware of what it is, and how we can heal it. This is essential knowledge for anyone working with those who seem to activate from 0-100 constantly, and with seemingly minimal activation.

Feedback
Kathryn presented our team with some very valuable information regarding the neuroscience of self-care. Our team commented that it wasn't hand holding fluffy stuff, it was practical, I thought I was OK at work but I can see my stress levels at home are up there, the length of the presentation was great and I really took away some good stuff from that. Lovely style, enjoyed her humour and real life relatable examples of tolerable stress. Clear message.

Life Education Trust

Kathryn was excellent - presentation was engaging & connected well to content from earlier in the day. Kathryn did a stunning job in explaining the complex teenage brain and left us with many newfound information.

Sport New Zealand

Kathryn was absolutely fantastic, we have received brilliant feedback after her session with our delegates really resonating with what she was saying and how they can take it forward in both their personal lives and professional careers.

Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS)

Our people really enjoyed Kathryn’s session, especially because it was strongly rooted in science. I think more practical tips on how to manage the stress would have made the session even better.

Treasury New Zealand

Kathryn is an incredible speaker with lots of interesting content to share around neuroscience. She conveyed her message in an engaging way and staff were talking about red brain green brain when they returned to work. She is incredible
