Brian
Cook AM

Former AFL Club CEO, Expert on Culture‑Led Performance under Pressure

Profile

Brian Cook AM is one of Australia’s most respected sporting and commercial executives, recognised for transforming major organisations through disciplined strategy, stakeholder trust and sustained high performance. Awarded Member of the Order of Australia for services to football, business and the community, Brian has led at the highest level across sport, government-linked organisations and complex, member-based enterprises.

Across more than three decades as a CEO, Chair and Director, Brian has delivered turnarounds that combine commercial strength with cultural alignment. As long‑serving CEO of the Geelong Football Club, he took the organisation from the brink of insolvency to 16 consecutive years of profit, tripled revenue, grew membership fourfold and oversaw the $340 million redevelopment of GMHBA Stadium through multi-level government and private investment. The Club played finals in 18 of 22 seasons and won three AFL premierships during his tenure.

More recently, Brian has applied the same disciplined leadership as CEO of Carlton Football Club, driving strong financial recovery, rapid membership growth, improved governance, record engagement scores and the introduction of the Club’s first Inclusion, Diversity, Equality and Belonging plan. Earlier in his career, he led the West Coast Eagles through a period of sustained profitability and on-field success, including two premierships, while also holding senior leadership roles within the West Australian Football Commission and the Australian Sports Commission.

Beyond sport, Brian has served on boards and advisory groups spanning health, tourism, education and major events, including as Chair of Barwon Health, a billion-dollar health service with more than 7,000 employees. He is an Adjunct Professor of Sports Management at Deakin University and a graduate of Harvard Business School’s Advanced Management Program.

As a Speaker, Brian brings clear-eyed insight into leading through complexity, building high-performance cultures, managing stakeholders across government and industry, and making hard decisions with integrity. His presentations are practical, grounded and outcome-focused, drawing on real leadership challenges faced in highly visible, high-pressure environments.
