David
Hall

Wheelchair Tennis Legend & Author

Beyond despair can be the sweetest things but only if you're willing to find them

Profile

David Hall is widely regarded as one of the best wheelchair tennis players of all time. His life changed forever in 1986, when, as a 16-year-old, he was hitchhiking from one party to another. He strayed onto the road and was hit by a car.

The accident put David in the hospital for four months and resulted in the amputation of both legs. He may have been down, but he wasn’t out. With determination and grit, he learnt to walk again with prosthetics and made it back into society.

A chance encounter with a local wheelchair tennis player reignited a passion for tennis that he had as a young boy playing at Toukley Tennis Club.

Thus began a journey that lasted fifteen years on the International Wheelchair Tennis Tour. David turned Professional in 1990 and, a few seasons later, moved to Boulder, Colorado and teamed up with coach Rich Berman. A year later, in 1995, he made wheelchair tennis history by becoming the first foreign player to win the men’s singles at the US Open. That year, David finished word number one, the first Australian to ever do so.

Over the course of his illustrious career, he would win over 80 tournaments. David also finished year-end world number one on six occasions, and whilst playing for Australia, won the World Team Cup four times.

David’s finest victory, however, occurred on October 28th, 2000, when, at the Sydney Paralympic Games in front of 10,000 screaming hometown fans, he won Australia’s first-ever gold medal in the men’s singles competition.

After retiring at the end of the 2005 season, David was inducted into the Australian Sport Hall of Fame in 2010.

In 2015, he was inducted into the Australian Tennis Hall of Fame in a memorable ceremony on Rod Laver Arena. Now his bronze bust resides in Garden Square at the Australian Open with other great tennis champions such as Newcombe and Goolagong. Also, in 2015, he was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island.

In 2025, David released his autobiography ‘Superbeast’.
