Profile

Jane Bunn is a highly credentialed meteorologist with an infectious enthusiasm for the weather. As Channel 7 Melbourne’s resident weather forecaster and presenter, Jane is featured on the 6 pm and 4 pm News, as well as special national bulletins and events.

One of Jane’s crowning glories was her appointment as a Moomba Monarch in 2019, a huge honour and a dream come true. Jane has featured as a regular host of Channel 7’s coverage of the Moomba Parade, as well as hosting their annual Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal and co-hosting the lifestyle and leisure show The Great Weekend.

2023 sees Jane release her evocative children’s picture book, Storm. Illustrations of Young Jane and her childhood dog, Stampy take readers through the ins and outs of storm safety and the science behind storms.

Jane is Founder and CEO of Jane’s Weather (janesweather.com), helping Australian farmers make decisions to take advantage of the weather with their unique Consensus Forecast and Alerts Service.
With a Bachelor of Science degree from Monash University (majoring in Atmospheric Science and Mathematics), Jane was one of nine students from around Australia selected in 2006 to undertake a Graduate Diploma of Meteorology provided by the Bureau of Meteorology. As part of her studies she also spent a semester at Pennsylvania State University, one of the leading meteorology schools in the US.

After graduation, Jane was appointed as a forecaster with the BOM - posted initially to the Sydney office and later to Canberra as well as the RAAF’s Williamtown Base.

In 2008 Jane joined The Weather Channel as the morning meteorologist before moving on to WIN News to explain the highs and lows of regional Victoria’s weather, where she gained huge popularity.
As a weather consultant, Jane also advises farming communities throughout Victoria, the Country Fire Authority, the Department of Environment and Primary Industries, and a large number of organisations in the agricultural sector.

Before working at Channel 7, Jane presented the weather report for ABC News 24 and the ABC’s primary 7pm news bulletin in Melbourne. Jane has a Graduate Certificate in Journalism from Charles Sturt University and was also the resident weather forecaster and presenter on 3AW’s weekday Breakfast show.

Incorporating on-screen graphics, Jane explains how it rains, how to get moisture and instability to work together, discusses weather patterns, and analyses the likelihood of good rainfall in the months ahead. This is all tailored to the relevant part of Australia where the talk is held and simplifies complex climatology terms to make sure that everyone fully understands what to expect in the coming season.

Jane's Career

Over the course of her career, Jane has established herself as a highly credible meteorologist and star presenter within the Seven Network news team. The pathway to where she finds her career now is an interesting one from her University days through to the new and exciting challenges she experiences in her current role in the Seven Melbourne newsroom. Jane discusses the origins of where her passion for weather began, the benefits of studying abroad, the thrill of being accepted to join the Bureau of Meteorology and what it’s like to be behind the scenes in the studio preparing her nightly weather reports. Jane enjoys sharing all of the highs of her career to date together with all the challenges she has experienced along the way, not only as a woman in the media industry but also as one of the only highly credentialed scientists working in traditional media.

Jane is well equipped to speak to climate sustainability. She uses weather data to explain how we can evolve practices and take steps to better manage resources in a sustainable way. This can be tailored to speak specifically to the relevant industry or area.
