Martin Lakos started in the finance industry in 1979 initially as a telephone clerk on the trading floor of what is now the ASX.

From 1981 his stockbroking "apprenticeship" years, were spent in London where he was seconded from Rivkin & Co London to a top 10 UK firm Shephards & Chase on the international sales desk.

He also spent some time with a commodities trading house before returning to Australia. Following which Martin was appointed as an institutional client adviser with Rivkin & Co. After the 1987 stock market crash Rivkin & Co was acquired by the HSBC UK affiliate James Capel, where Martin continued as an institutional adviser. He returned to London with James Capel to grow a European business and returned to Australia in 1991 with a young family.

Over this time he developed significant relationships with key investors in Asia and the Middle East, these were attractive to Macquarie Bank and Martin joined Macquarie in 1994. Martin held senior client facing roles within Macquarie as an Associate Director, including heading up the Asia sales desk for 7 years, he was appointed 2IC of the retail advisory business in 2004 and became a Division Director in 2006 managing 120 advisors.

In addition to Martin's passion for advising clients he spent nearly half of his Macquarie career as a media spokesperson and presenter at various client events articulating Macquarie's view of the world.
