Turn Your Creative Passion into a Sustaining Career

I love what I do and I want that for you.

Sally Brownbill has spent her entire working life involved in the creative industry and has helped many careers begin and blossom. She is one of the best connected people in the industry and her straightforward and supportive approach to consulting is legendary. Regardless of age or stage of life, Sally believes everyone who dreams of working creatively should take the leap. Her main purpose is to help creative people be the best they can be.

Sally is an engaging speaker who draws on her many years experience in the creative industry to inspire and encourage others. Her business The Brownbill Effect supports one of the largest creative networks in Australia.
She is personally connected to some of the most important people in the industry and is highly regarded by the legends and those getting started. Sally holds a unique position in Australia’s creative industry and has developed a deep understanding of the business and the opportunities it provides.

After graduating from RMIT with her photography degree Sally headed overseas, working in various creative roles in the U.K and Europe for over five years. Upon her return she started The Flash Place helping photographers find the work they needed and wanted. Sally extended this skill, and what was fast becoming a passion, to all creatives when she joined Dux Creative Consultancy four years later. During this time she also taught photography to photographic and advertising students at RMIT.
The Brownbill Effect was a natural evolution and in the last 10 years Sally has developed the business into a national consulting and networking resource.

She has forged a reputation throughout Australia for her ability to motivate and connect creative people and also consults on creative careers, as well as the design and editing of creative portfolios and websites.

Sally has written two well received books aimed at those wanting to kickstart their creative careers -‘How to Develop Your Career as a Photographer’ and her most recent publication ‘Leap In To Your Creative Life’.

She gives her time as a mentor, judge, and guest lecturer across a variety of educational institutions and is also an Adjunct Industry Fellow within the Faculty of Health, Arts and Design at Swinburne University and a member of several course Advisory Boards.

Talking Points

You can reinvent yourself.

It’s never too late to change career direction at any stage of your life. Sally's journey illustrates this and shows it’s possible to achieve success even if the path is unconventional and seems risky at the time.

How to establish a creative career that feeds your soul and puts food on the table.

Work is an important part of our lives in many ways - one of them is it pays the bills. Finding the balance between working creatively and supporting yourself is crucial. You can then move beyond survival into creative mode. One factor in achieving this is building a network. Your network will get you started and sustain you, so it needs to be nurtured.

Adjust to the new normal

Employees are setting new boundaries, and this includes untangling from the idea that a sense of self is connected to the work they do. Today more people are playing an active role in shaping their working life gaining a stronger sense of safety and control. The one thing to remember about the new normal is the situation is constantly changing. Remain focused on what you want for yourself and think of ways you can navigate your way around every new situation.
