Sam Bloom suffered a devastating accident while holidaying with her family in Thailand. Her injuries were horrific. Her spine was shattered in two places, her lungs were ruptured and she had bleeding on the brain. Her treatment and therapy were extremely slow and she was faced with the daunting prospect of never walking again.
A chance encounter with an injured magpie chick, they dubbed Penguin Bloom, was to change her attitude, her recovery and save her family.
With the help of Penguin and the rest of the family, she was able to seize life again, inspire those around her and ultimately even rise to the top of competitive kayaking and compete in the Canoe World Championships in Milan.
Sam’s is a story of love, family, friendship, grit, determination and hope.
The parallel stories of recovery of Sam and Penguin Bloom formed the basis of a heart rending story underlining the power of the human spirit. The story is sensitively captured in Penguin Bloom by master photographer, Cameron Bloom. His work conveys tenderness, hope and resilience in the face of extreme adversity. International author Bradley Trevor Grieve provided the wonderful narrative - an honest and compelling account peppered with humorous asides.
Sam is now ready to tell her story.
She speaks to a backdrop of stunning photographs and videos. She takes us through a roller coaster of emotions on her remarkable journey with Penguin and her family to her new life today. It is a unique and moving experience with no holds barred.
It’s a story with profound messages for us all - of love and family, of the resilience within us all and how a serendipitous encounter with a little bird bound it all together.
Today, Sam has reconnected with her love for the ocean and made a triumphant return to surfing. In August 2018, Sam was selected as a member of the Australian Adaptive Surf Team and won Gold and Bronze medals in the Women’s and Open Divisions respectively, at the 2018 World Adaptive Surfing Championships in California in December 2018.
Such is the wonder and power of this story that Penguin Bloom is to be made into a Hollywood film, produced by and starring Naomi Watts. Sam will also serve as Executive Producer on the film.
Today, Sam continues to surf competitively and lives with her husband and three boys on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.
