Tara
Brown

60 Minutes Reporter

Profile

Tara Brown joined 60 Minutes in January 2001. Since then she has travelled the globe reporting myriad stories; on patrol with the U-S military in Afghanistan, to starving polar bears in the Canadian tundra or exploring secret chambers in the Great Pyramid of Giza.

Along the way Tara has interviewed some of the world's most famous faces-amongst them movie stars, Brad Pitt, Jude Law, and Mel Gibson, and rock stars ACDC, The Police, Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin and Powderfinger. In between: royalty, politicians, and every-day people caught with extraordinary stories to tell.

Tara was one of the first Australian journalists to report from Ground Zero, after the tragic September 11 terror attacks on New York City. She also reported on the 2005 London bombings and a year later profiled the remarkable Australian survivor Gill Hicks. Her 2012 report 'Abducted' was nominated for a Logie in the category of Most Outstanding Public Affairs report.

Tara attended Davidson High School in Sydney, graduating in 1986. She completed a Bachelor of Arts (Communication) Degree at Charles Sturt University in Bathurst in 1989 and soon after landed a job in Channel Seven's Sydney newsroom as an assistant to the chief-of-staff. Tara moved to WIN Television in Wollongong in 1991, where she completed a cadetship in journalism. In June 1992 she joined the Nine Network's Nightline, compiling features including 'Australian Agenda' reports. Tara left Nightline in July 1993 to report for A Current Affair. Initially based in Melbourne, she moved to A Current Affair's Sydney office in 1994. Her most memorable stories for A Current Affair include a series of reports on a group of Australian soldiers returning to Vietnam on the 30th anniversary of the conflict; uncovering a tyre dumping racket which posed a major environmental threat; and a feature story on refugees in Bei Hai in southern China. She also worked on Nine's Farm Hand specials. While still working as a reporter on A Current Affair, Tara also cohosted Today on Saturday between November 1996 and February 1999. Tara also hosted The Gift – an eight-part factual series following organ donor recipients and the families of organ donors.
