Tiffany Cherry may not have played football, but she knows a lot more about the pressures of being an elite athlete than most. She has seen first hand the pressure footballers put their bodies under during the course of the game.
Tiffany is a trained physiotherapist and sport masseur, and has worked with some of Australia’s leading athletes. She was an accomplished hurdler, has represented Australia at the 1999 World Championships, trained with Cathy Freeman, been a runner for Brian Taylor when he was coaching an under 19s side and worked as the physiotherapist for the Richmond Football Club.
To get the job with Richmond, Tiffany had to pass a test – give Coach John Northey a “hard” massage. She succeeded. Tiffany says one of her greatest sporting moments was walking down the race and out onto the MCG with the Richmond team for a game during the final series.
During her training she worked as the physio for her former school’s first XVIII, Carey Grammar as well as the Old Carey Grammarians. Here, former Collingwood champion, Brian Taylor asked Tiffany to be his runner.
“That is how I started learning about the positions in the game. It was fantastic. I knew the game, but I had never played it. Well – I did play one game in year 12!”
At the completion of her degree, Tiffany won a 12 month scholarship with the Olympic Park Sport Medical Centre. During this time she worked as a physio for many major sporting events.
