Gary (Angry) Anderson first came to the attention of Australian rock music fans as the singer with Buster Brown. After touring the country with Buster Brown he joined forces with Pete Wells and Rose Tattoo were born on a hot New Years Eve in Sydney in 1976. Seen as pioneers of hard rock music in Australia, Rose Tattoo’s ‘bad boy’ antics also got them wide-spread attention. They have gone on to become internationally recognised pioneers of hard rock with bands such as Guns ’n’ Roses crediting their existence to the influence of Rose Tattoo.
The band had a number of long breaks over the years. In 1986 Angry had the biggest hit record of his career with Suddenly. When it was chosen as the song for the Neighbours TV show wedding of Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan, it catapulted to the top of the Australian charts. Angry landed the role of Herod in the record breaking Jesus Christ Superstar – The Musical in 1992.
During 1993 Angry and Rose Tattoo reformed at the request of Guns ’n’ Roses for their Australian tour. The band was inducted into the Australian Hall of Fame in 2006.
Rose Tattoo continue to tour Europe every year and in 2008 they toured with acts such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Kiss, Slayer and Motorhead performing at many of Europe’s largest festivals.
Angry is also recognised as a champion of children, highlighting the plight of and raising money for disadvantaged and sick children. For his work, Angry has received awards such as the Advance Australia Award, Australian Medal (AM) and the Special Merit Advance Australia Award.
