Peter Baines is one of Australia's first 'socialprenuers' and the founder of Hands Across the Water, the fastest growing boutique charity in the country. Hands Across the Water has raised over $2.3 million for the children of Thailand and is unique in its absolute commitment to ensuring that every cent donated is used to enhance the lives of the children. Since it began in 2006, not one cent of money donated has been spent on fundraising or administration.
Peter developed a passion for corporate social responsibility after witnessing the devastating effects of the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami, the most destructive on record. He was deployed to Thailand for three months to lead International Disaster Victim Identification efforts, facing unprecedented challenges that provided him with an invaluable insight into leadership and crisis management. Peter understands that in times of extreme difficulties it is focusing on results and not excuses that gets the job done. With the right team, a clarity of purpose and determination, Peter believes there is nothing that cannot be achieved.
Peter founded Hands Across The Water after returning to Australia to raise funds for, and an awareness of, the children of Thailand left orphaned by the tragedy. The charity has funded the construction of two orphanages, purchased a 14,000 tree rubber plantation, and built a sports and recreation field and is currently working on the construction of a million dollar medical and community centre.
Peter believes that it is by taking a different approach that the seemingly insurmountable becomes possible. He has touched the lives of many through his work and continues to do so through his compelling keynote presentations, in which he takes the audience from laughter to tears as he tells his story and shares the lessons learnt from managing crisis on the world stage, making a real difference for many and in doing so realising his dream.
Peter worked with the NSW Police for 22 years, a leader in the investigation of some of the world's most horrendous crimes and disasters. Peter specialised in forensic science both nationally and internationally, including two years with the National Institute of Forensic Science on counter terrorism capacity building in conjunction with Interpol and the United Nations Office of Drug and Crime. Today Peter spends his time helping businesses build effective corporate social responsibility platforms to create goodwill, staff engagement and sustainable change.
